While all brides dream of having a perfect wedding day, it doesn’t always happen this way. While everyone strives to make the best of a difficult situation, none perhaps did it better than this couple, who stunned the bride’s grandma by having the reception at her care home.
Julia Napolitano’s mother, Linda, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s around six years ago, and subsequently she has had to live in a dedicated care center. But instead of her mother missing out on the special moment, Julia brought the reception to her.
Julia and Justin opted to hold the reception at Silverado Oak Village, and the care home was happy to oblige. The staff managed to get everything together and provide a magical day for the bride and groom.
They got married at a beautiful local church before heading over to the home for the reception. Enjoy a few photos of Julia and Justin’s heart-warming reception below and, please do share with us your thoughts on the wonderful day.
Julia Napolitano and Justin Phillips married last November, and held their wedding reception at the Silverado Oak Village Alzheimer’s home, which is located in Menomonee Falls, WI.
Linda is 66 and her Alzheimer’s, which was diagnosed six years ago, means she cannot recognize her husband or daughter. While she is still able to get around, sadly, she is not able to speak.
Speaking to TODAY, Julia said that as an only child, being there for her mom has always been a priority. And, as she is still alive, she wanted to make sure she was there to enjoy the moment, but didn’t want to make her leave the home she has become accustomed to.
Hence, they brought the wedding to her, and the great staff sorted all of the preparations for Linda’s hair and makeup.
The guests were made aware of what was going on at the home that day, and were invited to join in on the festivities.
For Julia, the moment where she walked in and her mother got to see her in her wedding dress was an extremely special moment that she’ll never forget.
While Linda wasn’t able to literally communicate with her family, the signs from the day made it evident that she knew what was taking place. Julia also confirmed this, stating that she was sure her mother knew “something special was going on”.
BuzzFeed Life also found that the care home have noticed an incredible boost in Linda’s spirits since the wedding day.
Julia thought that the most touching moment of the day was when her mother and father danced together. She noted that they had been married for more than 30 years and that her father always wanted to be there to give her daughter away.
At the reception, Julia and Justin danced in front of everybody and continued to have a spectacular day, which included the cake-cutting ceremony. They were extremely happy to have couples, staff and residents dancing and enjoying the moment.
Julia has thanked the Alzheimer’s home for their support, from helping her mother to being keen to host the reception. Linda has been well since the wedding, and the newly married couple are delighted with the support they have received.
In an interview with BuzzFeed Life, Justin said, “There wasn’t a dry eye to be found”.
