This heartwarming video tells the story of Ellie, a baby elephant that was struggling to survive in the wild after being rejected by his herd. Elephants are known for being highly social animals, so this added an extra layer of psychological trauma for the poor little elephant. When he arrived at the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage, Ellie was not only mentally distraught, but physically ill as well. Luckily, the veterinarians at the shelter were able to heal baby Ellie’s umbilical hernia and nurse him back to health. However, the lack of social interaction with other elephants was taking its toll, and Ellie quickly became depressed and uninterested in his daily activities. Duma, a former sniffer dog living at the shelter, befriended Ellie, and the change in his demeanor was almost immediate. The two best pals can be seen frolicking and playing in the video, and shelter workers are confident that Ellie will be able to be reintegrated into a herd in the future, either back in the wild or in a nature preserve with other abandoned elephants.
